  • The development of the material and spiritual needs of human life, considering the elevation of community standards in the modern era—stemming from technological development and increased living standards—has made it essential to pay attention to external domains. Hence, the focus and development of the Landscape Architecture discipline, as an art and knowledge dedicated to the design of outdoor spaces surrounding buildings, has become necessary.
Graduates of this program, known as Landscape Architects, are specialists in designing and creating outdoor spaces such as courtyards, gardens, functional open areas like cemeteries, and similar environments. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Landscape Architecture and the necessity for collaborative efforts among professionals related to this field, it should be noted that the responsibility for leading and guiding the design team falls upon the Landscape Architect.
Within the framework of a modern perspective on space, landscape has emerged as a dual phenomenon—both objective and subjective—that focuses on the design of outdoor spaces. Landscape architecture is an art, knowledge, and profession that organizes and designs outdoor spaces. Unlike architecture, which focuses on the design of mass and buildings, landscape architecture is concerned with open spaces, the functions of which are rapidly increasing in today's cultural world. In Iran, this discipline is still not sufficiently recognized, and despite various related projects, professional landscape activities are often performed by non-specialists related to the field, such as agricultural engineers, urban planners, and architects. The desire to develop the qualitative aspects of outdoor spaces necessitates clarification of the professional activities and presence of this field, along with the provision of appropriate scientific education. Landscape Architecture is a discipline that has its own foundations, knowledge, and specific domain among the arts and sciences, wherein the knowledge of architects only addresses a small part of its needs. The number of projects related to landscape architecture, primarily recognized as leisure activities, has been increasing every day in the context of societal development and occupies a significant volume of national investments.

    Objectives

Graduates of this program, referred to as Landscape Engineers, must undertake the design of spaces collaboratively and within workgroups, given the interdisciplinary nature of landscape architecture. Thus, the role of landscape architects as the leaders of design teams and managers guiding the studies and actions of group members is of special significance. Therefore, it is essential that the course planning is structured in a way that enables landscape architects to fulfill their roles in guiding and leading the design group.

According to the approved regulations of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, the total number of credits for the Master’s program in Landscape Architecture is 32 credits, which includes 20 credits of mandatory specialized courses, 6 credits of elective courses, and 6 credits for the thesis.

  • The specialization area of the PhD in Landscape Architecture focuses on various aspects of the rich culture of Iran within the context of environments that are connected to human ecological living conditions and, ultimately, the sustainability of landscapes in urban spaces and surrounding areas with relevant interdisciplinary orientations. The specialized PhD in Landscape Architecture is proposed as a thematic area for various disciplines within this field, as well as for interdisciplinary fields related to allied specialties.

The PhD in Landscape Architecture represents the highest educational level in the landscape category in the country, aimed at training academic staff for universities and research institutions, as well as strategic managers of executive agencies. It accepts graduates with master's degrees in landscape architecture and other related fields and educates them in the PhD program in Landscape Architecture, with specializations refined based on their final thesis topics.

The development of both the material and spiritual needs of human life, considering the enhanced standards of societies in the modern era—resulting from technological advancement and increasing living standards—has heightened the necessity to focus on external spaces. Therefore, the attention and advancement of landscape architecture as an art and knowledge that focuses on designing the outdoor spaces of built environments has become imperative.

Given Iran's rich history and legacy in areas related to landscape and gardens, and its recognition as one of the great civilizations in landscape architecture globally, training specialists and thinkers in this field is a crucial and necessary step in developing and localizing this modern science in the country and strengthening Iran's position in relevant scientific and specialized circles. Additionally, in light of the growing development of fields related to designing outdoor spaces, training professors and doctoral graduates familiar with contemporary knowledge in this field, as well as aware of local potentials and challenges, is essential for fulfilling the need for faculty members in
    universities and higher education institutions.

    Objectives

To train specialists knowledgeable about landscape science, rooted in Iranian culture and civilization, particularly for the development and expansion of this science in the country.
To train theorists specializing in modern landscape knowledge and its development methods in Iran and the world.
To cultivate academic staff for universities and advanced research institutions.

According to the regulations approved by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, the total number of credits for the PhD program in Landscape Architecture is 36 credits, comprising 9 credits of core courses, 9 credits of elective courses, and 18 credits for the thesis.
