The city, as the highest cultural product of man and a symbol of human-environment interaction throughout history, has always been the subject of various specializations that deal with the subject of "place"; and various disciplines have proposed methods for intervention in it. These methods have yielded different results, which have led to successive changes and modifications of past methods. At the same time, the evaluation of conventional interventions in cities shows that the produced space is not considered a "place" worthy of a city that has developed throughout history. How can one intervene in a part of the city and design a new space suitable for daily life that is consistent with the "totality of the place" and the "spirit of the city's history"? The efforts of architects in the form of project-oriented approaches and in the next generation in the framework of restoration definitions were followed by urban planning measures in the form of urban design or regional and environmental approaches. Each of the newly born professions provided answers to the main question "How can we intervene in the city?" based on their own theories and scientific frameworks.
Landscape is the latest discipline that has responded to this question with a new definition of "place" and then "city". In addition to its main goal of expressing the landscape approach in the design of urban spaces, this book has a look at past experiences in three chapters to provide scholars with the key to understanding and criticizing the works of the past. A brief review of the approaches of "architecture", "urban design", "environmental design" and "urban restoration" are the fields studied in this research.
Chapter 1: Common Approaches in Urban Design
