This preface addresses the challenges arising from the rapid and, in many cases, unsustainable growth of cities, as well as the shortcomings of urban management. The author argues that unbalanced urban development has resulted in numerous problems, including air pollution, environmental degradation, poor management of natural resources, the deterioration of urban fabric, and a decline in the quality of life. Accordingly, the protection of natural landscapes and the enhancement of the urban environment should be regarded as among the highest priorities of urban management.
Referring to Iranian cities, particularly Tehran, the author emphasizes the vital role of natural elements such as rivers and valleys in shaping urban identity, sustainability, and livability. It is noted that these valuable natural assets have not received adequate attention in terms of conservation and utilization. The author maintains that the restoration of urban rivers not only contributes to biodiversity conservation and ecological improvement but also expands public spaces, enhances citizens' quality of life, promotes cultural and recreational activities, and stimulates economic development.
The primary objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive scientific foundation, present practical experiences, and propose effective strategies for the restoration of urban river landscapes. It aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, students, planners, and urban managers engaged in sustainable urban planning and management.
